Briferendum Aftermath Series: Why is Supreme Court ruling still important?

Last year, the High Court of the United Kingdom ruled that the government of the United Kingdom would have to seek the approval of the parliament in order to trigger the Article 50. The government appealed to the Supreme Court over the ruling. However, in the meantime, Theresa May’s government has assembled the necessary support in the parliament, which backed the Prime Minister’s target to trigger Article 50 by the end of March.

Still, the Supreme Court ruling would be very vital to watch out for as it can give powers to the regional government in the Kingdom to have their say in the process. If the Supreme Court rules that Ms. May’s government would have to seek approval from regional parliaments in Scotland, and Northern Ireland. The Supreme Court will announce its decision sometime later this month.

While the parliament at Westminster has already approved the government’s plan, it has demanded that Ms. May discloses some of the details of her negotiating stance to the parliamentarians. Today, Ms. May is scheduled to discuss that in a speech around 11:45 GMT.

The pound is treading water cautiously ahead of that speech and currently trading at 1.212 against the dollar.
