Briferendum Series: All you need to know about referendum timelines

British referendum over the stay in the European Union is scheduled on June 23rd but knowing just that isn’t enough. For all the traders and investors it is a must know a bit more details of the timeline so they can adjust their wake time, sleep time, attention time, and coffee breaks. Below are the key timelines and facts that will matter to you most: (Kindly note all times given are most probable ones and should act as a reference)

When will the referendum vote begin?

The voting will begin at 6:00 GMT, on 23rd June.

When will the voting close?

Voting will close at 21:00 GMT, on 23rd June.

When will the counting begin?

Counting will begin as soon as the voting is over and will continue throughout the night.

How many counting area are there?

All in all, there are 382 counting areas in 12 major regions.

Will there be any exit polls?

Since there could be large errors and unnecessary panics and turmoil no exit polls are planned. However, some big investors and hedge funds may have gone for private exit polls, which could start affecting the market just after the voting closes.

When will the national count will be announced?

The final national result is expected to be announced at 6:00 GMT.

Who will announce the final count or national result?

The national result will be announced by chief counting officer Jenny Watson in Manchester City.

Will there be any regional announcements before the national?

Each of the 382 counting areas will announce each of their individual results.

When will those results start coming?

The results will start coming as early as 23:30 GMT and that in Sunderland. Northern Ireland will be announced at 00:30 GMT, Durham around 1:30 GMT, 24th June, Bradford around 2:00 GMT, Cornwall around 3:00 GMT, Birmingham and Sheffield around 3:30 GMT, Leeds, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Glasgow around 4:00 GMT.

So large swings in the market may begin as early as 21:00 GMT, 23rd June and continue till 4:00 GMT, 24th June.
