In a rather unusual turn of events, the American cab hailing company Uber is now facing a lawsuit that was filed by a French businessman for supposedly causing him and his wife to divorce. The lawsuit, which is asking for €45 million ($48 million), indicates that while the plaintiff was cheating on his wife, Uber’s app allowed her to spy on the businessman. The cheating husband had apparently used the wife’s iPhone to order the cab, which kept receiving notifications even though he had signed out before leaving.
According to the website Le Figaro, it was a bug that allowed the wife to discover her husband’s illicit conduct. Once the user is signed out after using any device, all notifications are supposed to stop. Unfortunately for the Côte d’Azur businessman, this was not the case, which allowed his wife to keep track of his movements.
It’s not yet clear exactly which information allowed the wife to figure out that the husband was having an affair, in the first place, but a few assumptions can be safely made. After all, she would have had access to plenty of information, including the name of the Uber driver, the car’s license plate, the arrival time, and of course, if the husband is actually doing what he called her to say he was doing.
If the businessman had ever called the wife to say that he was staying late at the office, for example, and proceeded to take a cab drive all over town, his game would be up. Upon trying to replicate the bug, it would appear that the only devices affected are iPhones and only works on Uber app versions older than the most recent update, BGR reports.
In light of this discovery, should his lawsuit against Uber end up failing, perhaps the businessman could go after Apple next? As to the case itself, the cab hailing company has refused to make a comment.
