China and the United States share both the ability and responsibility to guide the development of artificial intelligence, according to commentary published by a social media account linked to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV.
The remarks from Yuyuantantian followed a Washington summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump, where artificial intelligence, trade and investment were among the issues discussed.
The commentary cited Xi as saying the world’s two largest economies should cooperate to ensure AI remains under human control while directing the technology toward serving the public interest.
According to the article, responsible AI development requires not only advancing the underlying technology but also expanding access to its benefits. Effective AI governance should simultaneously address risks associated with the technology, including misuse and the possibility that increasingly advanced systems could escape meaningful human control.
The comments underscore the growing importance of AI governance in U.S.-China relations as both countries invest heavily in artificial intelligence infrastructure, research and commercial applications. Beijing’s state-media commentary portrayed the two economic powers as having a shared role in balancing technological progress with safeguards against potential risks.
The article also urged authorities to implement agreements reached between Washington and Beijing during recent talks.
Those agreements included the leaders’ endorsement of mechanisms for continued trade and investment consultations, as well as a reciprocal tariff-reduction arrangement valued at $30 billion. China and the U.S. also agreed to extend outcomes from earlier trade negotiations held in Kuala Lumpur.
Government departments at all levels should work to carry out the consensus reached between the two countries, the commentary said.
The focus on artificial intelligence reflects how AI technology is becoming increasingly intertwined with broader U.S.-China economic relations. Alongside trade and investment, AI governance is emerging as another area where Washington and Beijing are discussing both cooperation and the management of strategic risks.
