Manga and anime franchises often have years-long hiatus before getting a sequel or a follow-up series. The same goes for “Code Geass” where fans were hoping to see the third season of its animated series.
Avid fans likely know by now that the much awaited new “Code Geass” project is slated to release in 2019. But is it going to be the highly anticipated “Code Geass” season 3?
Technically, the producers of the series will not follow the typical series format. But the story of “Code Geass” will definitely continue with an all-new installment in 2019. Note, though, that it will be a sequel movie officially titled “Code Geass: Lelouch of the Resurrection.”
There had been some confusion among fans that “Code Geass” season 3 is in the pipeline when the producers implied they are working on a new project. Fans believed they were referring to the continuation of the animated series.
However, the release of the “Code Geass: Lelouch of the Resurrection” trailer — not the “Code Geass” season 3 — somehow shuts down any possibility for another series installment. While the movie is regarded as a sequel, it is not promised to exactly follow the storylines from the anime series.
The ending of “Code Geass” R2 implied that Lelouch had died. Though, up to this day, a lot of fans still argue it is not the case. The release of a sequel movie instead of “Code Geass” season 3 is when these fans expect that Lelouch will be revived.
Despite many fan theories suggesting a Lelouch revival in that movie that serves as the “Code Geass” season 3, it is important to remember what writer Ichiro Okouchi said in 2008: “While it's undeniable that Lelouch's story has ended with a full stop, the other characters' stories are still on-going, and it's not like the world [of Code Geass] itself has come to an end either. [I/we] didn't want to end it by closing it up for good.”
Fans may not be getting a “Code Geass” season 3 but they are certainly getting the next best thing in “Code Geass: Lelouch of the Resurrection.” The movie premieres in Japan in February 2019.
