CD Projekt Red confirmed what “Cyberpunk 2077” players have likely expected – the “Phantom Liberty” expansion will be a paid content. But fans will have to wait for further announcements for its specific pricing.
All additional content that the developer released for “Cyberpunk 2077” was made available for free. But they mostly featured wardrobe items, additional weapons, and new gigs. But CD Projekt Red global PR director Radek Grabowski confirmed “Phantom Liberty” will be different.
“As for the expansion's pricing - we have not revealed exact details yet,” Grabowski told GamesRadar+. “But it will be a paid one.” Grabowski also noted that CD Projekt Red’s expansions are “traditionally cheaper” than base games, suggesting that the same approach could be used for “Phantom Liberty.” “Cyberpunk 2077” was priced at $59.99 when it launched on PC and consoles in December 2020.
The same report noted that CD Projekt Red expansions’ pricing typically depends on how much content they have. For example, “The Witcher 3” expansion “Blood and Wine” was more expensive ($19.99) compared to the preceding “Hearts of Stone” ($9.99).
Both expansions of “The Witcher 3” delivered new stories and missions, but the amount of content they offered was remarkably different. “Hearts of Stone” introduced a new gameplay mechanic called Runewords and new adventures that would take up to 10 hours to complete. “Blood and Wine,” on the other hand, included an all-new open-world map Toussaint, more than 90 additional quests, and the overall gameplay content could last 30 hours.
It remains to be seen how much cheaper “Phantom Liberty” is going to be compared to the “Cyberpunk 2077” price at launch. But its confirmed content might provide some insight into its potential pricing.
CD Projekt Red has described “Phantom Liberty” as a spy-thriller expansion and confirmed it will introduce a new Night City district. The “Cyberpunk 2077” expansion will let players explore the Pacifica Combat Zone for the first time. The official teaser hints at V pledging their allegiance to the New United States of America.
The “Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty” release date is not set in stone yet, but CD Projekt promised to launch the expansion in 2023. However, it will not be released on all last-gen consoles, including PS4 Pro and Xbox One X.
“We’ve made the difficult decision to develop it only for PC, Stadia, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, as the scope for the expansion makes releasing it for previous-gen consoles technologically challenging without compromising player experience,” the developer said. Note that Google has since announced Stadia’s shutdown in January 2023.
