Ford Motor Company is recalling more than 870,000 F-150 pickup trucks from 2021 to 2023 models due to a potential parking brake malfunction that could unexpectedly activate, posing a crash risk. The recall follows 918 warranty claims and three wire chafing reports.
Alabama News reported that Ford Motor is recalling newer models of its F-150 trucks in the United States as the electric parking brakes may suddenly switch on. To be more exact, the recall affects pickups with single exhaust systems and vehicles from the 2021 to 2023 model years. It was noted that the automaker’s F-Series are its top-selling units in the U.S.
The company said in the recall that owners may see a parking brake warning light and a warning message on their dashboard. It was explained that the unexpected activation of the parking brakes could happen when a rear wiring bundle can come in contact with the rear axle housing.
The sudden contact may graze the wiring, and the action can result in a short circuit. Under this circumstance, the parking brake may turn on even without any action from the driver. This flaw can increase the risk of a crash; thus, Ford Motor issued the recall.
The automobile manufacturer based in Dearborn, Michigan, said it has already received 918 warranty claims in addition to three wire chafing reports in North America. In these claims, 299 mentioned unexpected parking brake activation, and 19 drivers said the defect occurred when they were on the road.
“Damaged electric parking brake wiring may lead to inadvertent parking brake application while driving, potentially resulting in loss of control of the vehicle and increasing the risk of a crash,” SiLive.com quoted Ford Motor as saying in the documents it filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Ford Motor will send letters starting Sept. 11 to inform owners of F-150 trucks about the issue. Drivers may also inquire about the recall by contacting Ford customer service at (866) 436-7332 and stating the recall number 23S35.
