While CD Projekt Red had been primarily focused on bringing updates and fixes to “Cyberpunk 2077” last year, the team is working on the card game “Gwent” had been working on its own title. The studio has confirmed this week that a standalone single-player “Gwent” game, codenamed Project Golden Nekker, is in development and will be released in 2022.
Avid fans of the “Witcher” franchise may recall that the Nekkers are monsters introduced in “The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings” and “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.” They were known for having their strength in number, as they are generally harmless when they attack alone. But they become a serious threat once they appear in groups. Going by the nature of the Nekkers, it seems quite an ironic name for the upcoming “Gwent” game that CD Projekt Red primarily advertises as a single-player experience.
The project was confirmed by CD Projekt Red to IGN, but most details are still under wraps. For now, the developer only confirmed that the upcoming “Gwent” game would be a standalone release, so players do not need to own or complete the original “The Witcher: Wild Hunt” mini-game or any spin-off versions of the “Gwent” card game.
“It’s not another Witcher Tales [game] but something different,” Gwent communications lead Pawel Burza told the publication. “We’re aiming to provide a captivating single-player for players who prefer it over competitive multiplayer Gwent.
CD Projekt Red also confirmed that the standalone “Gwent” game is slated to launch this year. But in a separate statement to Reuters, Burza said they are not ready yet to announce a specific release date. Speculating based on the previous release dates of “Witcher” games, though, IGN suggests the game might arrive in October.
CD Projekt Red also released a set of concept art for cards likely included in the upcoming “Gwent” game, including a Golden Nekker, The Barbarian, Living Fire, and Fire Elemental. The developer also provided a sneak peek on a marketplace and a library with a Golden Nekker hiding behind a bookshelf.
Some of the likely features in the next standalone “Gwent” game are new cards. IGN suggests that they could also be made available on the multiplayer card game, considering CD Projekt Red has done the same when “The Witcher Tales: Thronebreaker” was released.
