Hyundai Motor is reportedly preparing a multibillion-dollar investment in South Korea’s Saemangeum west coast zone, targeting robotics, artificial intelligence, a large-scale data centre, and hydrogen infrastructure. According to Reuters, which cited sources familiar with the matter, Hyundai Motor Group and the South Korean government could sign a preliminary agreement as early as this week.
News of the potential deal sent Hyundai Motor shares soaring more than 10% during Seoul trading, reflecting strong investor confidence in the automaker’s long-term growth strategy. The planned investment underscores Hyundai Motor Group’s accelerating push into future mobility technologies, including AI-driven autonomous driving, advanced robotics, and next-generation energy solutions.
The Saemangeum project is expected to strengthen Hyundai’s position in key growth sectors such as smart manufacturing, clean energy, and data-driven mobility. By expanding robotics capabilities and building critical data centre infrastructure, the company aims to enhance its competitiveness in artificial intelligence and connected vehicle ecosystems. These technologies play a central role in Hyundai’s vision for fully autonomous vehicles and intelligent transportation systems.
Hydrogen infrastructure development is also a significant component of the investment plan. Hyundai Motor has long championed hydrogen fuel cell technology as a sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuels. Expanding hydrogen production and distribution facilities in South Korea could further solidify the country’s role as a global leader in clean energy innovation.
If finalized, the agreement between Hyundai Motor Group and the government would mark one of the largest private-sector investments in the Saemangeum zone. The move aligns with South Korea’s broader strategy to attract high-tech industries and promote green energy development.
As Hyundai deepens its focus on robotics, AI, hydrogen energy, and advanced data systems, the company is positioning itself at the forefront of the rapidly evolving global mobility and technology landscape.
