Israel has stopped all humanitarian aid into Gaza following the expiration of a 42-day ceasefire, aiming to pressure Hamas into accepting a U.S.-proposed extension. This proposal seeks to prolong the truce through Ramadan and Passover, contingent upon Hamas releasing half of its remaining hostages initially, with the rest to follow upon a final agreement.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office stated that no ceasefire would be allowed without the release of all Israeli hostages, warning of "additional consequences" if Hamas refuses. In response, Hamas labeled Israel's move as "blackmail" and urged mediators to pressure Israel to fulfill its obligations under the original agreement.
The initial ceasefire, mediated by the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar, facilitated the release of 33 Israeli hostages and nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, alongside a partial withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza. The second phase was intended to address the release of remaining hostages, complete Israeli withdrawal, and discussions on Gaza's postwar administration.
However, talks have stalled, with Israel insisting on the return of all hostages before further negotiations, while Hamas demands adherence to the original phased plan. The blockade has drawn international criticism, with organizations like Oxfam deeming it a violation of international humanitarian law.
The situation has exacerbated Gaza's humanitarian crisis, with over 2 million residents facing shortages of essential supplies. The international community continues to call for restraint and a return to negotiations to prevent further escalation and alleviate civilian suffering.
