“Luke Cage” is the next Netflix Marvel TV show to bite the dust following “Iron Fist,” with the series being canceled by the streaming service. While it was understandable why the martial arts program was axed, many were surprised that the invincible Harlem icon met the same fate. Fans were so taken aback, in fact, that they have launched a petition to save it.
The cancellation of “Luke Cage” was confirmed by Netflix, Deadline reports, which has since placed many fans of the show in a state of shock. After the critically acclaimed first season of the show, it was largely expected that it would continue for a few more seasons. However, it seems that this is just not going to be the case anymore.
“Unfortunately, Marvel’s Luke Cage will not return for a third season,” Netflix and Marvel had announced on Friday. “Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem’s Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series.”
As the publication notes, axing “Luke Cage” came as a surprise to many. Writers were already working on Season 3 and the actors who were supposed to appear are still under contract. Taking these and more factors into consideration, most simply thought that the show would still be around for a while. Based on what insiders have been saying, though, a lot of this is apparently due to some major internal conflict.
Regardless of what the reasons may be for canceling “Luke Cage,” fans only really want it to be brought back. As such, a petition on Change.org was launched in an effort to actually save the series. Unfortunately, history has shown that such campaigns will rarely ever make a difference, in the end. At best, the bullet-proof hero will have a cameo role in Marvel shows that are still on Netflix.
