Developer Crystal Dynamics released the “Marvel’s Avengers” patch 1.8.0 early Tuesday containing a number of new features. However, players immediately discovered that the update also came with a bug that makes their IP addresses appear on
‘Marvel’s Avengers’ patch 1.8.0 has a security-related bug
“Marvel’s Avengers” players started reporting the bug just a few hours after patch 1.8.0 went live. Fans have since been warning others and advise against streaming their plays as the issue appears to automatically flash their IP addresses on the screen without an option to hide it.
Crystal Dynamics has recognized the issue, confirming that the bug involves IP addresses and players’ usernames. Based on several players' reports, though, the issue seems only present on PS5 consoles. In a follow-up tweet, the “Marvel’s Avengers” developer advised PS5 users to “refrain from streaming or posting screenshots online” to avoid sensitive information from being posted in public.
The IP address is one of the most sensitive pieces of information that anyone with an online activity should protect. As Kaspersky explains, it is a “unique address” that could help identify a device connected to the internet or a local network. IP addresses can be used to track down an individual and it has been commonly used as a tool for doxxing. Cybercriminals can also exploit this information to use on more sophisticated attacks. These circumstances should put into perspective the seriousness of the recent “Marvel’s Avengers” bug.
‘Marvel’s Avengers’ says a fix should be available after a day
A few hours after the issue was identified, Crystal Dynamics announced it is already testing a solution for the IP address bug. Unfortunately, it will not be released right away and that only added to the disappointment of some fans. The “Marvel’s Avengers” developer said it is planning to release a hotfix on Wednesday, June 23, at around 8 a.m. PT / 11 a.m. ET.
We are currently testing a solution to the issue of personal information, including the player's IP address and username, being displayed on screen on PS5 and plan to deploy a hotfix tomorrow at around 8AM PT.

Meanwhile, other fans regret that the issue is overshadowing the new “Marvel’s Avengers” gameplay features delivered through patch 1.8.0. One of the biggest content added through this update is a new villain sector called Beating the Odds, which has been garnering some positive reviews.
