FORT LAUDERDALE/DAVIE, Fla., Jan. 03, 2018 -- The Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) has received approval from the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for a class of 150 students to begin studying at an additional site in Clearwater, Florida in the fall of 2019. NSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine campus in Fort Lauderdale will continue to enroll a class of 230 students annually.

“NSU is pleased to get this affirmation of our plans for the Clearwater campus,” said President Dr. George L. Hanbury. “This is a monumental opportunity for the College of Osteopathic Medicine to expand to meet the increasing demand for top quality medical care.”
“With a class of 250 students on main campus in Davie and 150 in Clearwater, NSU’s Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine will have an even greater impact statewide, nationally and globally,” said Elaine Wallace, D.O., M.S., M.S., M.S., dean of the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dean Wallace will oversee both sites and Kenneth Johnson, Jr., D.O., has been named executive associate dean and will be based in Clearwater as the on-site leader.
The expansion of NSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine has been made possible by a commitment from the Patel Family Foundation, announced in September 2017. It includes a $50 million gift and an additional $150 million investment in real estate and facilities, which includes a 325,000 square-foot medical education complex – a major component of NSU’s new Tampa Bay Regional Campus in Clearwater.
Demolition of the former Clearwater Christian College began in October. The new site, with a groundbreaking scheduled for early 2018, will also house the programs currently offered at the university’s Tampa Regional Campus
Students interested in the Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine will complete the standard application, with interviews following at NSU’s main campus. Selected students will have a choice of studying at either NSU’s main campus or at the Tampa Bay Regional Campus.
NSU has established agreements with HCA West Florida Division and the Florida Hospital System for both clinical rotations and residency opportunities in the Tampa area, according to Dean Wallace.
NSU’s Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine is part of the university’s Health Professions Division, which also includes the Dr. Pallavi Patel College of Health Care Sciences and the Colleges of Allopathic Medicine (M.D.), Pharmacy, Dental Medicine, Optometry, Nursing, and Medical Sciences.
