‘New Girl’ Season 6 Greenlit for Possible Mid-Season Return; Megan Fox to Reprise Role as Reagan?

The cast of American sitcom 'New Girl' with Zooey Deschanel as Jess

‘New Girl’ season 6 is scheduled for a possible mid-season return this year. Zooey Deschanel will reprise her role as main protagonist Jessica Day while Megan Fox may make another appearance as Reagan.

According to Carter Matt, a new season for the popular American sitcom series is set to premiere sometime later this year but no official release date has been announced as of the moment.

Fox renewed the show’s contract last April joining other network shows such as ‘Family Guy’, ‘Bob’s Burgers,’ ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine,’ ‘The Last Man on Earth,’ and ‘The Simpsons.’

David Madden, Fox Broadcasting entertainment president, said, “Every network comedy should aspire to what Liz Meriwether is achieving in ‘New Girl,’ with its bravura dialogue, inventive and witty performances by the talented cast and emotionally engaging storytelling…The series is as creatively strong today as it ever was, we want to congratulate ‘New Girl’ on reaching its milestone 100th episode, and we can’t wait for the next subversive and hilarious chapter of these characters’ lives.”

The 100th episode aired in March. The sitcom follows the life of Jessica “Jess” Day (Zooey Deschanel) after she moves into a Los Angeles loft with three men, Nick Miller (Jake Johnson), Schmidt (Max Greenfield), and Winston L’Andre Bishop (Lamorne Morris). Other recurring characters include Jess’ fashion model best friend Cece Parekh (Hannah Simone) and Coach (Damon Wayans Jr.).

‘Transformers’ beauty Megan Fox guest starred in season 5 as Reagan Lucas, a sales representative from a pharmaceutical company who rents out Jess’ room in the loft while Jess went away for jury duty. This was the time Deschanel had to take a maternity leave.

According to Bustle, Fox is believed to be returning for a second run. Season 6 may pick-up where its predecessor left off – with Jess realizing that she still had feelings for Nick but having to go around Nick and Reagan’s blossoming relationship.

Although Fox’s return has not been made official just yet, creator and showrunner Liz Meriweather expressed her hopes for her character’s return along with Nasim Pedrad, who plays Winston’s office partner and potential love interest Aly Nelson.

Meriweather also admitted that she was planning to revisit Jess and Nick’s relationship but had to tread carefully in order to maintain the feeling of an ensemble show.

She said, “For me, it's the heart of the show. I knew we were going to come back to it, but we had to figure out a way to get back into it that feels good for the show and the characters and will allow us to have stories… We're trying to figure out a way to reintroduce the dynamic but in a new way. Jess is out of the relationship with Sam [David Walton] and sort of pining for Nick, while he's starting his relationship with Reagan. Hopefully that takes us to some new story areas next season.”

‘New Girl’ is slated to air later in 2016 on Fox. The highly popular sitcom earned multiple accolades and nominations since its premiere in 2011 including nominations for Golden Globe Awards and Primetime Emmy Awards.
