Nike, the American footwear and sportswear manufacturing company, honoring the iconic Montreal bagel by releasing a sneaker inspired by the said Canadian staple.
Montreal Gazette reported that Nike introduced its new Dunk Low Montreal Bagel, but it is not yet officially out in the market. The new kicks were described to look a lot like a bagel, complete with the sesame seed motifs.
Its shoelaces are simply white, but the details on the Dunk Low Montreal Bagel sneaker clearly show its bagel theme. The colors are also light, and in Nike’s own description, it is “Bringing fresh-baked style to the streets, this delicacy of a design rings you in with carb-lover colors - in other words, it is beige.”
On the US website of Nike, it was indicated that the new bagel sneakers are set to be sold for $120. The listed release date is on Jan. 17 at 11 p.m., although some sellers in Canada posted an earlier date.
Canada’s Off the Hook Boutique wrote on Instagram that the Montreal Bagel Dunk is a celebration of tradition. The shoe shop further stated that “It is about the routine of stopping at your favorite shop and getting a dozen sesame bagels. It is about the intoxicating smell, the irresistible urge to take a hot, fresh bite, and the inevitable mess of sesame seeds as you savor every last one.”
The shop also said that it would be exclusively launched in its store on Friday, Jan. 13. This schedule is said to be an early-access launch for Canadians. Then again, prior to the drop, local news outlets reported that Nike’s Dunk Low Montreal Bagel may actually be hard to find in the country where the bagel design was based on.
Thus, sneakerheads may only get their chance to have it through exclusive store outlets. This means they have to watch out for announcements because it is certain that fans will compete to get their hands first on the bagel-themed kicks.
Meanwhile, the Montreal Bagel has been considered an essential part of the city and its culture for more than 65 years. The rolled bread is seen as a representation of the different customs and communities that make up this Canadian territory and all flourishing together in the same cluster so Nike’s move of paying homage to the city’s staple is quite meaningful.
