It has been a while since Oppo revealed its prototype of a foldable smartphone, but the company has yet to announce concrete details about its launch. That might change soon as some of the technical specifications of Oppo’s rumored folding device have leaked online.
Oppo appears to be gearing up for the imminent launch of its foldable smartphone now that its specs have appeared in the wild. Well-known leaker Digital Chat Station posted on Weibo this week that the device would have an “ultra large screen” that could measure between 7.8 to 8 inches.
In the comments, the leaker said the upcoming Oppo foldable phone would look similar to Huawei Mate X2’s form factor. The device, which launched in China last February, was redesigned with the addition of a normal-sized external screen like Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold phones. However, Digital Chat Station did not mention any details about Oppo’s foldable phone’s secondary display.
Oppo’s take on foldable smartphones might have superior features than the Mate X2, though. The same post mentioned that the unannounced device sports an OLED panel that supports 120Hz refresh rate. The Huawei Mate X2 has a 90Hz screen,
It is unclear how many cameras the Oppo foldable smartphone will have. But Digital Chat Station reported it will sport a 32MP selfie camera and a 50MP IMX766 sensor on the back, which is likely the device’s main camera. The leaker added that Oppo will use a side-mounted fingerprint scanner.
Unfortunately, the leak did not mention a release window but there are indications that it might be released this year. Last month, long-time display analyst David Naranjo posted a list of smartphones with LTPO OLED panels reportedly supplied by Samsung Display. Included in the list is an Oppo device with an “in-folding” screen. The same list noted that it would be released in the last quarter of 2021.

The same post from Digital Chat Station also claimed that the Oppo foldable phone will be powered by Snapdragon 888 and will be pre-installed with an Android 11-based ColorOS 12. These rumored specifications suggest that the device could be released before Qualcomm announces its next Snapdragon 8-series SoC, which is anticipated to happen in December.
