Romania's centrist mayor of Bucharest, Nicusor Dan, won the country’s presidential election in a surprise upset against nationalist candidate George Simion, who had pledged to emulate U.S. President Donald Trump's politics. With nearly all votes counted, Dan secured about 54%, defeating Simion’s 46%.
Dan, a 55-year-old mathematician, gained late momentum with his pro-EU, anti-corruption message and support for Ukraine. Simion, a vocal Trump supporter, had led the first round with 41% and campaigned to cut military aid to Ukraine and shift Romania away from EU influence. His early claim of victory was later retracted.
The election saw the highest turnout in 25 years, underscoring the stakes. Romania plays a key logistic role in supporting Ukraine, and Dan has emphasized that continued backing is vital for national security amid the threat from Russia. His supporters chanted anti-Russia slogans in Bucharest as results rolled in.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy hailed Dan’s win as a “historic victory,” praising Romania’s reliability as a partner. Political analysts say Dan’s win prevents a potential pro-Russian pivot and reassures investors concerned about economic stability and NATO unity.
Dan faces challenges forming a government to tackle Romania’s EU-highest budget deficit and avert a credit rating downgrade. He urged citizens to have “hope and patience” as economic rebalancing begins.
This election followed a canceled vote six months ago due to alleged Russian interference in favor of far-right candidate Calin Georgescu, who was later banned. Simion had promised to name Georgescu as prime minister if elected.
The vote reflects broader European resistance to MAGA-style populism. According to Eurasia Group’s Mujtaba Rahman, Dan’s win is a “strong result for the pro-European candidate,” highlighting a voter pushback against far-right influence.
