Russian drone attacks targeted the southern Ukrainian city of Odesa overnight, marking the second assault this week and leaving at least 18 people injured, according to local officials. The latest strike adds to the ongoing escalation in the region, which has remained a key focus in Russia’s prolonged war against Ukraine.

Authorities reported that the heaviest damage occurred in Odesa’s central Prymorskyi district. Several high-rise and mid-rise residential buildings were struck, causing significant destruction. Serhiy Lysak, head of the regional military administration, confirmed that fires broke out on upper floors and rooftops following the attack. Emergency responders were able to contain the fires, though the full extent of the damage is still being assessed.

Ukraine’s emergency services warned that the number of casualties could rise as rescue operations continue. Among the injured is a 17-year-old boy, while two victims remain in critical condition in intensive care. In addition to residential areas, a kindergarten suffered severe damage, raising concerns about civilian safety in densely populated zones.

The strikes also impacted commercial and public infrastructure, including a shopping center, a hotel, and administrative buildings. Photos shared by officials show thick smoke and flames engulfing parts of damaged structures. Dozens of vehicles, including buses and private cars, were destroyed or heavily damaged in nearby parking areas.

Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched a large-scale aerial assault involving one ballistic missile and 206 drones starting Wednesday evening. Of these, 172 drones were intercepted or neutralized. However, one missile and 32 drones successfully hit targets across 22 locations.

Odesa, a major Black Sea port vital for Ukrainian exports, has repeatedly been a target of Russian attacks. Earlier this week, a similar strike injured 14 people, highlighting the continued threat to civilians and critical infrastructure in the region.
