South Korea’s SK Hynix is accelerating its push into the artificial intelligence semiconductor market with a major new investment aimed at strengthening its global competitiveness. The company announced plans to invest approximately 19 trillion won (around $13 billion) to build a cutting-edge semiconductor fabrication facility dedicated to advanced chip packaging.
According to a regulatory filing, the new plant—referred to as P&T7—will be located in the Heungdeok district of Cheongju. Construction is scheduled to begin in April 2026, marking another significant step in SK Hynix’s long-term strategy to dominate the fast-growing AI memory sector. The total investment may still be adjusted depending on market trends and the company’s evolving business priorities.
The upcoming facility will focus on advanced semiconductor packaging, a critical process that improves the performance, speed, and efficiency of high-bandwidth memory (HBM). This type of memory plays a key role in powering artificial intelligence systems, data centers, and next-generation computing technologies. As demand for AI-driven applications continues to surge worldwide, companies like SK Hynix are racing to expand production capacity and enhance technological capabilities.
As a major supplier to Nvidia, SK Hynix is already deeply embedded in the AI chip supply chain. Earlier this week, the company revealed it had started mass production of a next-generation memory module designed for Nvidia’s upcoming Vera Rubin AI platform. This development further underscores SK Hynix’s commitment to innovation and leadership in AI semiconductors.
Despite the positive outlook, SK Hynix shares dipped slightly by 1% on Wednesday, following a strong rally that pushed the stock to record highs in the previous session. Market analysts suggest the minor decline reflects short-term profit-taking rather than concerns about the company’s long-term growth.
With increasing competition in the global semiconductor industry, SK Hynix’s aggressive investment highlights its determination to capture a larger share of the booming AI memory market and maintain its position as a key player in advanced chip technology.
