NEWARK, Calif., Jan. 08, 2018 -- SMART Modular Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of SMART Global Holdings, Inc., (NASDAQ:SGH), and a leader in specialty memory, storage and hybrid solutions including memory modules, Flash memory cards and other solid state storage products, today announced its NVDIMMs now feature Autonomous Self Refresh (ASR). SMART’s patented ASR feature (patent number 9,779,016) allows SMART’s NVDIMM to independently initiate a backup after an event which results in a system freeze or “hang” without power loss. Active data in the NVDIMM is saved and recovered in events such as an OS (operating system) crash, CPU fault, MCU (Memory Controller Unit) fault, BIOS hang, blue screen, or other motherboard failures.
Coupled with SMART’s ability to provide encryption, the new NVDIMM with ASR provides the highest level of security and protection for end customer data and is ideal for use in servers that support financial trading, online ordering and other applications where critical information is exchanged. SMART’s NVDIMM with ASR can be configured to wait for a watchdog timer to expire before autonomously initiating a backup operation. After the watchdog occurs, the NVDIMM autonomously initiates a DRAM self-refresh and backs up the NVDIMM data to on-board NAND Flash. Even if the watchdog feature is not enabled, the ASR feature works in conjunction with the SAVE_n signal to ensure that DRAMs are always placed in self refresh before a backup.
SMART’s NVDIMMs with the ASR and encryption features are continuing to meet customers’ persistent memory needs and demands for high-speed access to nonvolatile memory, data security in an expanded range of use cases. Gartner recently forecasted that by 2021, 38% of main server memory bits will be in nonvolatile memory devices. SMART is helping to drive and support this market transition to persistent memory.
SMART offers a full lineup of NVDIMMs with ASR from 8GB to 32GB and speeds up to DDR4-2666. To learn more about SMART’s NVDIMMs please visit www.smartm.com/nvdimm.
