‘Sherlock’ Season 5 Possible Air Date, Plot, Characters: Mark Gatiss Provides Potential Storyline of Fifth Installment

Fans are still hoping that “Sherlock” Season 5 will be happening despite the crime-solving drama being off the air for two years now. So is there a possibility for a 2019 release? Or perhaps a start in production at very least?

Both are unlikely to happen. It’s well-known by now that the biggest obstacle standing in the way of “Sherlock” Season 5 is scheduling, Digital Spy reported. Lead stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are still tied to their MCU contracts, with other pending projects waiting for their attention.

Show creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat are also busy producing their new series “Dracula.” However, all of them haven’t shut down the possibility of making “Sherlock” Season 5. The problem is that it would take years before they pick it up again.

Gatiss previously said that if Sherlock will be returning on television, it would take at least four years before they gather everyone again. There are still a lot of stories that “Sherlock” Season 5 can tell. And the way the finale ended, the series certainly has a lot of paths to take moving forward.

Gatiss described that the first four installments were simply “Chapter One” and provided some hints what will happen if a “Sherlock” Season 5 is greenlighted, Express reported. “Dr. Watson is now Doyle's brave widower and Sherlock Holmes has become the wise and humane version of the main run of the stories (we've focused, so far, on the cold Holmes of the early days.)

Indeed, through the journey of Sherlock and Watson, the titular private detective has learned that emotions do have a room in his frigid, calculating heart. This was made evident when one prominent character died and the effects it had on Sherlock’s personality. Regarding the release date of “Sherlock” Season 5, there’s still no news about it either. Going by Gatiss’ statements, however, it could drop sometime between 2022 to 2023.
