If the world-renowned BBC One series would follow its usual production schedule, “Sherlock” season 5 is supposedly going to premiere in early 2019. But, obviously, that is not the case this time and the show’s hiatus is currently set indefinitely.
In the show’s first season, it amassed over 8 million average viewer ratings in the United Kingdom. That number grew to 10 million by the time season 4 aired. With that relatively growing number, it is quite a disappointment that “Sherlock” season 5 could not come anytime soon.
One of the very clear hints that “Sherlock” season 5 is not happening anytime soon, let alone in 2019, is the fact that its showrunners Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss will be busy working on another project with BBC. The highly-regarded TV duo has been signed to create a TV series adaptation of “Dracula” that will air on the said network and on Netflix for viewers in other regions.
Recently, fans were told that the production of “Sherlock” season 5 is likely starting soon. The information came from “Speedy’s Cafe” owner Chris Georgiou. “I probably shouldn't be saying this, but I've heard they'll be coming back for a fifth season,” he told Time Out.
Utter nonsense

Unfortunately, when a fan page asked Gatiss to confirm the report, the show’s co-creator just broke the hearts of many fans eagerly waiting for “Sherlock” season 5. Gatiss called out Georgiou’s statement as “utter nonsense.” This means even the production of the new episodes might not have a schedule yet.
Those worried that “Sherlock” season 5 might not ever happen still have some reason to hope for the positive news in the future. For one, BBC is yet to officially announce the show’s cancellation.
While the official announcement of “Sherlock” season 5 has also yet to happen, the showrunners are looking forward to doing more of the Benedict Cumberbatch- and Martin Freeman-starring series. “We hope to carry on as long as we can,” Moffat told Digital Spy a few years back.
