Taylor Swift is one of those artists who don’t get involved in politics. But ever since Donald Trump was voted into office in 2016, the 28-year-old singer has changed her tune, CNN reported.
In her most recent political speech, Taylor Swift encouraged people to register and vote in the upcoming mid-term elections during the American Music Awards. What’s more, the “Blank Space” singer also took to Instagram to endorse two Democrats who will be running in Tennessee, her home state.
Taylor Swift’s post has since accumulated nearly 2 million likes on Instagram after posting it this Sunday. And as to be expected, the post drew the ire of Republican voters and even got a response from Donald Trump himself to the surprise of no one.
The POTUS said that he likes Taylor Swift’s music “25 percent less” now that she’s being politically vocal. This also puts the “Red” singer at odds with Kanye West, a staunch supporter of Trump who recently made headlines after his rant during “Saturday Night Live.”
Taylor Swift and Kanye West have a history of drama between them which started when the rapper interrupted the pop sensation during an acceptance speech in 2009. Back then, the two’s friction only centered on music but is now expected to bleed into the political spectrum.
As for Taylor Swift’s post itself, it seems that her words resonated with a lot of people as voting registration saw a nationwide spike shortly after she shared her sentiments. The singer singled out Republican Senate nominee Marsha Blackburn in her post, saying that her opposition towards the candidate stems from the beliefs of Blackburn and the things she stands for.
Taylor Swift mentioned Blackburn's voting against equal pay for women, voting against the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, and voting against equal treatment of the LGBTQ+ community. It goes without saying that this is quite the blow to Blackburn’s campaign as Swift has a massive nationwide following backing her values. And seeing the sudden uptick in registration across the country, Swift’s followers may not be just showing their support on social media but also in the upcoming mid-term elections as well.
