The highly anticipated sequel film “The Matrix Resurrections” will premiere in a few weeks, but that may not be the only thing that sci-fi fans should expect. A promotional image for “The Matrix Awakens” recently leaked, and it appears to be coming on PS5.
Reddit user the_andshrew shared an interesting find from the PlayStation Network backend for something called “The Matrix Awakens.” Unfortunately, the source said the listing did not have much information or even an explicit indication if it was going to be a full game.

“The Matrix Awakens” backend listing reportedly included just the Title ID and Concept ID, along with the suggestion that “it exists for PS5.” The leak, however, came with a teaser image from the PSN backend. The poster features a scenic skyline view with the familiar “Matrix” theme and the text “an Unreal Engine 5 experience.”
While “The Matrix” franchise has had some video game adaptations in the past, there is no indication that “The Matrix Awakens” is going to be a full game. Fans, however, expect it to be a movie tie-in, considering that it was discovered just weeks before the premiere of “The Matrix Resurrections.” Even if “The Matrix Awakens” does not turn out to be a full game, the teaser that it is an “Unreal Engine 5” experience could still be something that would be interesting to video game fans.
Epic Games has opened early access to Unreal Engine 5 for some time now, but the game creation platform has yet to fully launch. Games confirmed to be in development using Unreal Engine 5, such as “Redfall” and the next “Gears of War,” are also not expected to be released anytime soon. But with the likelihood of “The Matrix Awakens” going live this month, the suspected movie tie-in could be one of the first widely accessible content that could demonstrate how Unreal Engine 5 would elevate the quality of future games.
“The Matrix Resurrections” will be the latest main title installment to “The Matrix” film series that will follow the events of “The Matrix Revolution” from 2003. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will reprise their roles as Thomas Anderson (a.k.a. Neo) and Trinity. But Laurence Fishburne and Tanveer K. Atwal are not slated to return for their original roles. Morpheus will be portrayed by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Sati by Priyanka Chopra Jonas. The movie will be released in theaters and HBO Max on Wednesday, Dec. 22.
