“The Winds of Winter” is where HBO’s “Game of Thrones” was based and, in its author’s original outline, it was said that the ending of the TV series had been revealed. However, after reading the George RR Martin’s old letter to the publisher of the “A Song of Ice and Fire” series, it was said that the original plan for “GoT” has changed.
George RR Martin sent a letter to his publisher in 1993. It was a long note because he detailed his plans for the “ASOIAF” that include “The Winds of Winter,” which is the sixth book in the novel collection. According to Winter is Coming, the letter gained attention after it emerged again and was posted on Reddit.
The interesting part is that, through the letter, fans found out that the original story of “A Song of Ice and Fire” is very different from what has been retold via “Game of Thrones” on TV. Now, they are wondering if the ending of the drama would still follow George RR Martin’s original plan or it would be changed as well. And since “The Winds of Winter” is not out yet, how will it be affected by how “GoT” will conclude?
As previously announced, the final season of “Game of Thrones” will commence this April. It will be the show’s eight and last season and will feature only six episodes. This means that George RR Martin failed to achieve his previous goal of releasing “The Winds of Winter” and one more remaining book in the “ASOIAF” collection before the TV adaption is completed.
In any case, as stated in the letter sent by George RR Martin to his publisher, he disclosed that only five major characters are going to survive until the end and they are Tyrion Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen, and the Winterfell children -- Arya, Bran and Jon Snow.
“Five central characters will make it through all three volumes, however, growing from children to adults and changing the world and themselves in the process," Martin wrote. “In a sense, my trilogy is almost a generational saga, telling the life stories of these five characters, three men and two women," "The Winds of Winter" author added.
It can be noted that George RR Martin mentioned “three volumes” in his letter. This is because, at that time, “The Winds of Winter” is not yet included as he was initially planning a trilogy before expanding the story to seven volumes.
Meanwhile, George RR Martin has yet to finish “The Winds of Winter.” He admitted that the book is long delayed, but he promised to focus on it now and make sure to release it soon since he also knows that it is what the fans want.
