CD Projekt Red announced several projects for the “The Witcher” franchise a few weeks ago, including one that is codenamed “Canis Majoris.” The developer has now confirmed that it is a full remake of the first “The Witcher” title.
Before this week’s announcement, CD Projekt Red described Canis Majoris as a full-fledged installment and will be separate from other upcoming “The Witcher” games included in the Polaris saga. Details about “The Witcher Remake” were revealed as the studio celebrated the first title’s 15th anniversary this week.
Like other video game remakes, the studio promises to rebuild the first game “from the ground up.” And “The Witcher Remake” joins other CD Projekt Red titles in development using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5 instead of its proprietary REDengine.
The company also confirmed that Polish studio Fool’s Theory is handling the development of “The Witcher Remake” with veteran developers of the series. CD Projekt Red, on the other hand, is in charge of “full creative supervision.”
Fans will have to wait some time to get more information and start playing “The Witcher Remake,” though, as CD Projekt Red said project Canis Majoris is still in the early stages of development. “We want to ensure that the game is created with the utmost care and attention to detail,” CD Projekt Red said in a blog post. “While we’re excited to share the news with you, we want to ask you for patience as it will be a while until we start talking about this project in detail.”
It can be recalled that CD Projekt Red announced last March that it is working on the next mainline installment of the series also using Unreal Engine 5. It had been widely dubbed as “The Witcher 4.” But the company confirmed earlier this month that it is codenamed Polaris and it will introduce a new saga for the series, so “The Witcher 4” may not be an entirely accurate title.
The new saga will include three upcoming “The Witcher” titles, starting with the “Polaris” project. The developer said earlier this year that the game would introduce a new School of the Lynx, which means fans will likely see a slate of new characters as well. CD Projekt confirmed this month that Polaris is at least three years away from launch.
