U.S. President Donald Trump is preparing for a packed two-day visit to the United Nations General Assembly in New York, with meetings scheduled or expected with several world leaders as conflicts in Iran and Ukraine dominate the diplomatic agenda.
Nearly 130 heads of state are gathering for the annual UN meeting. Trump is expected to arrive in New York on Monday afternoon before attending political events at Trump Tower. He is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly on Tuesday morning.
U.S. Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz said Trump will use his speech to discuss how his administration has addressed international challenges, including efforts to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
The more than six-month conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran is expected to feature prominently in Trump’s diplomacy. He plans to meet leaders from Gulf Cooperation Council countries as Washington considers its next steps toward Tehran. The talks come amid heightened regional tensions following attacks by Iran-aligned Houthi forces against Saudi Arabia.
Trump is also set to have his first face-to-face encounter with Venezuelan interim President Delcy Rodriguez since former President Nicolas Maduro was removed from power in January.
On Monday, Trump is scheduled to meet New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani at Gracie Mansion. Their discussions are expected to center on issues affecting New York City and its residents. The two politicians have publicly clashed over policy despite cordial previous meetings.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has also said he agreed to meet Trump in New York, with the talks expected Tuesday. Trump’s schedule additionally includes separate bilateral meetings with British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.
The UN gathering gives Trump an opportunity to address several major foreign-policy issues simultaneously, with Iran, Ukraine and relations with key U.S. allies expected to remain central to his meetings.
