U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Israel would transfer control of Gaza to the U.S. after the war, claiming Palestinians would be resettled elsewhere, eliminating the need for American troops. His proposal to develop Gaza into the "Riviera of the Middle East" triggered widespread condemnation.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the idea, while Defense Minister Israel Katz ordered the military to prepare for the "voluntary departure" of Gaza residents, suggesting exit routes via land, sea, and air. Critics argue that forced displacement violates international law, with Hamas rejecting the plan and Palestinians vowing to stay.
Regional leaders, including Saudi Arabia and Jordan’s King Abdullah, rejected Trump’s proposal. Egypt also dismissed any involvement in displacing Palestinians. Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Gaza residents would need to relocate while the enclave is rebuilt but did not confirm if they could return.
Israel’s offensive has killed tens of thousands since Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack, displacing millions. Far-right Israeli figures support resettlement, echoing Trump’s vision. Former General Giora Eiland endorsed the idea, arguing aid should not reach displaced Palestinians returning to northern Gaza.
As ceasefire talks continue, the impact of Trump’s proposal remains uncertain. Critics fear permanent displacement, likening it to the 1948 Nakba. Katz urged European nations critical of Israel’s actions to accept Gaza refugees, escalating tensions further.
The proposal raises legal and ethical concerns, with international opposition mounting. Whether Trump intends to follow through or use it as a negotiation tactic remains unclear.
