U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed the Ukraine conflict and the removal of U.S. sanctions in a call on Saturday, according to Moscow. The call, initiated by the U.S., follows President Donald Trump’s surprising conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where both leaders agreed to commence peace talks immediately.
Lavrov and Rubio emphasized restoring respectful U.S.-Russia relations and removing trade and investment barriers imposed by the previous Biden administration. While specific sanctions were not disclosed, both sides expressed willingness to address international issues, including the Ukraine conflict and Middle East tensions, particularly Palestine.
Sanctions against Russia, imposed after its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, have strained bilateral relations. Trump’s hour-long call with Putin marked the first direct presidential communication since Biden's brief contact with Putin prior to the invasion.
Additionally, Lavrov and Rubio discussed the operation of Russian diplomatic missions in the U.S. An expert meeting will be scheduled soon to address mutual concerns and ease diplomatic restrictions.
This diplomatic outreach signals a shift in U.S.-Russia relations under Trump, aiming to foster dialogue, economic cooperation, and conflict resolution, particularly in Ukraine and the Middle East. The development comes as European allies react to Trump's unexpected approach to Russia, potentially reshaping global diplomatic dynamics.
