US under Trump Series: Trump talks the dollar down

US President-elect Donald Trump, whose win the November election renewed a rally in the green buck in the hope that his policies would spark inflation, which in turn would prompt faster rate hikes from the US Federal Reserve has taken his swing on the dollar. Today, the green buck is down against all of its major trading counterparts as Mr. Trump said in an interview to Wall Street Journal that the US dollar is too strong.

Though he made his comments with regard to the Chinese currency Yuan, the financial market has pushed the green buck broadly lower. Mr. Trump said that US companies can’t compete with the Chinese companies now because the dollar is too strong, “It’s killing us”. Since his win, the dollar has rallied about 5 percent against a basket of currencies.

It is not clear, how the Trump administration can avoid a stronger dollar if the economy faces higher inflation and the Fed increases rates further, while other prominent central banks like the Bank of Japan (BoJ), Bank of England (BoE), and the European Central Bank (ECB) are still continuing their easing policies.
