Walmart's adoption of a Tesla Semi hit the California highways, signaling the electric truck's expanding reach. The sighting follows Tesla's revelation of a late 2025 and early 2026 launch window for the highly anticipated vehicle, promising a new era in eco-friendly logistics.
Walmart Embraces Tesla Semi: Sign of Expanding Trial Programs and Future Logistics Dominance
On May 4, X user Accelerating Tech posted photographs of a Walmart-branded Tesla Semi that had been sighted just the day before in Stockton, California. In addition to the semi-carrying Walmart trailer, the Tesla cab bears the logo "Walmart Transportation LLC," implying that the retailer has formally accepted vehicle delivery as Tesla expands trial programs beyond its initial deliveries to PepsiCo in 2022.
According to Teslarati, the announcement came after Dan Priestley, Tesla's senior manager of semi-truck engineering, expressed gratitude to new clients at Martin Brower, which has also begun piloting a semi. Walmart has a continuing order with Tesla for hundreds of Semi units, but this is the first time Tesla has been demonstrated to deliver them.
The Tesla Semi has demonstrated excellent results in early pilot operations at Pepsi, with the vehicle traveling over 1,000 miles in a single day in one test.
At the time of writing, neither Walmart nor Tesla has responded to Teslarati's inquiries regarding the number of Semi units in use.
Tesla has been relatively silent about the semi-program since it delivered approximately 20 units to Pepsi in 2022. In December 2023, Tesla Vice President of Vehicle Engineering Lars Moravy announced that the Semi fleet had nearly surpassed 100 units.
Tesla announced during its Q1 earnings call last week that more Semi deliveries are scheduled for late 2025, with external customer deliveries beginning in 2026. In addition, Tesla broke ground on additions to its Gigafactory Nevada in January, which will enhance semi-manufacturing and production of the 4680-battery cell.
Tesla Semi: A Future of Eco-Friendly Logistics Set for Late 2025 Launch
Tesla set an actual launch date for the Semi in late 2025 or early 2026, citing the start of building a dedicated production site for the Class 8 truck.
Tesla has been tapping PepsiCo's knowledge. for an early pilot program with the Semi to evaluate real-world efficiency and travel. Tesla and PepsiCo have been together for the past two years. As the truck approaches serial production, engineers have been trying to understand how it would make fleets more efficient and ecologically benign.
However, the semi-debut has been delayed multiple times. Still, executives on Tesla's Q1 2024 Earnings Call on April 23 provided a timeframe for when they expect the haulage vehicle will be ready for more deliveries:
"Our first vehicles are planned for late 2025 of external customers starting in 2026.
Tesla's desire for a more economical and efficient manufacturing method has caused a delay in production. Additionally, Tesla's semi-production facility is now being developed in Nevada near the Tesla Gigafactory:
"So we're finalizing the engineering of the Semi to enable like a super cost-effective high volume production with our learnings from our fleet and pilot fleet and Pepsi's fleet, which we're expanding this year marginally. In parallel as we showed in the shareholder's deck, we have started construction on the factory in Reno."
The Semi is one of the most significant breakthroughs in Tesla's present pipeline, as it will allow the business to obtain a vehicle primarily designed for fleets and logistics.
