Warner Bros Discovery Inc. revealed it is preparing to launch its new streaming service, which it simply named "Max." The mass media and entertainment company said on Wednesday, April 12, that this would be rolled out on May 23.
This is a long-awaited streaming service from Warner Bros Discovery because subscribers will have more programs to view. It should be noted that Max was formed after the company combined HBO Max's scripted entertainment content with Discovery's reality programs.
As per Reuters, the new streaming service has plans to further expand its reach and attract more viewers aside from fans who regularly watch the acclaimed and tense shows of HBO by adding more unscripted lineup. It will also use high-profile shows, including TV series based on J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" books and a new prequel to the "Game of Thrones" series to get more subscribers.
Apparently, it is not just Warner Bros Discovery that is spending millions to improve their programming by adding more fresh content so they can compete and get more share in the streaming market, which is currently being led by Netflix Inc. Disney is also investing more for its Disney Plus streaming service thus the competition is getting tighter.
People can subscribe and enjoy Warner Bros Discovery's Max streaming service for a monthly fee starting at $9.99 per month. The cheapest plan is the ad-supported version, and the highest rate is $19.99 per month for the "Max Ultimate" option, which is free of ads and allows four members of the household to stream simultaneously.
Max is said to be one of the steps that Warner Bros Discovery's president and chief executive officer, David Zaslav, is taking to achieve the goal of becoming one of the major streaming service providers in the world.
Zaslav said during a presentation for Max's launch, "This is our time, this is our chance. I feel like for our company, this is our rendezvous with destiny."
Warner Bros Discovery's president and CEO of global streaming and games also said in a separate press release, "From the biggest superheroes to real life champions; from culture-shaping dramas to taste-shaping entertainment; from fantastical realms to the realest of worlds, Max will offer an unrivaled range of choice."
He added, "This new brand signals an important change from two narrower products, HBO Max and discovery+, to our broader content offering and consumer proposition. While each product offered something for some people, Max will have a broad array of quality choices for everybody."
