The iPhone 12 release won’t be arriving until the second half of 2020. However, fans are already excited to know if the new phones will support 5G, the latest technology to hit the mobile industry. Here’s what recent reports are saying.
Number of iPhone Variants
The consensus is that Apple will be releasing a number of iPhone 12 variants next year. However, reports do not agree just how many models of the upcoming flagship the company will be releasing.
For instance, CNET reported that there will be four iPhone 12 models next year. The source of this information is Samik Chatterjee, a JP Morgan analyst.
Chatterjee said that there are two 6.1-inch iPhone 12 models, one 6.7-inch model, and one 5.4-inch model. All phones will feature OLED displays.
On the other hand, Forbes reported that there will be six variants of the iPhone 12. The magazine based its data from Jun Zhang an analyst from international brokers Rosenblatt Securities.
There will be one 6.1-inch model with an LCD display while the five other iPhone 12 variants will all feature OLED screens. There will be two 5.4-inch models while three will be 6.1-inch models. Lower-end versions will feature dual rear cameras while the pricier options will sport 3-camera assembly where one of the sensors will have a Time-of-Flight feature.
5G Capability
5G is probably the biggest technological revolution to hit the mobile market recently. With its promise of faster data speeds, most gadget lovers have probably included 5G capability as a must-have feature for their dream phone.
When it comes to the 5G feature in the upcoming iPhone 12, reports also do not agree on this area. There are those saying that all models will be 5G enabled while others claim that not all iPhone 12 will feature this type of connectivity.
CNET’s report claims that all four iPhone variants will feature 5G support. The only difference is that the higher-end models, like the iPhone12 Pro and 12 Pro Max, will get 5G mmWave support. On the other hand, lower-end variants will likely support the sub-6Ghz spectrum.
Meanwhile, Forbes’ report claims that there will be two kinds of iPhone 12 when it comes to connectivity. Three of the six variants will only support 4G while the other three models will be 5G enabled.
Apple reportedly opted to introduce 4G-only iPhone 12 models to target markets where 5G infrastructure and coverage is still low or non-existent. Meanwhile, the 5G models are targeted for markets with already widespread 5G coverage.
iPhone 12 Release Date
While there is still no definite iPhone 12 release date at the moment, Apple is expected to launch the new models in the fall of 2020. Be sure to stay tuned for the latest tech and gadget updates.
