Chinese President Xi Jinping urged closer cooperation between China and the European Union to defend globalization and resist unilateral trade actions, in a pointed criticism of U.S. President Donald Trump’s escalating tariff policies. Speaking in Beijing during talks with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, Xi emphasized that “there are no winners in a tariff war,” calling for joint opposition to trade bullying.
Xi’s remarks follow Trump’s move to impose over 145% tariffs on Chinese imports, while temporarily suspending new duties on EU goods for 90 days. In retaliation, Beijing imposed 125% tariffs on U.S. imports, intensifying the global trade standoff. Xi highlighted the EU’s vital role in maintaining global economic stability and reaffirmed China's support for the EU’s unity and growth.
Sanchez, in his third visit to China in as many years, positioned Spain as a bridge between the EU and China. He called for open dialogue between Washington and Beijing, and urged China to address the EU’s concerns over trade imbalances, with the EU’s trade deficit with China exceeding $300 billion last year. Spanish officials dismissed U.S. warnings about strengthening ties with China, emphasizing mutual economic opportunities.
The leaders signed multiple agreements covering science, education, technology, and cultural exchange, including deals on pork and cherry exports. Xi also encouraged collaboration in new energy, smart cities, and high-tech manufacturing—sectors where China continues to dominate and the EU seeks strategic investment.
China’s growing investments in Spain, particularly in advanced technology areas such as electric vehicles, hydrogen, and batteries, are drawing increased attention from Brussels as the bloc seeks to close its tech gap with Asia. The talks highlight China’s intent to bolster its influence in Europe amid mounting U.S.-China trade friction.
