If saving money was one of your main goals this year, but you still haven’t managed to save anything, you’re probably wondering if there are any small changes that you can make to help you save each week or month. Many of us are spending more money than we realize on small, cheap things that add up to big money. We’ve put together some of the top expensive habits that you might not even realize are costing you as much, and what to do instead in order to make some bigger savings.
Smoking
If you are a smoker, then you probably already know that it is cigarettes that are eating away at your bank balance. With the price of cigarettes constantly going up in order to try and put people off from buying them, it is an expensive pastime. Making cigarettes expensive might be great for preventing people from starting smoking, but it can make things even more difficult for those who already do. But, by quitting, or even cutting down completely on cigarettes, you can save some substantial cash. Thanks to nicotine replacement options such as nicotine chewing gum or e-juice subscriptions from auster.com, it’s easier than ever to save money on smoking.
Coffee and Hot Drinks
If you can’t go without your morning Starbucks on the way to work, then you might want to think twice if you add up how much your morning latte or cappuccino is actually costing you. Assuming that you spend around $5 per day on coffee, you could save $25 per week working a regular Monday-Friday job by simply bringing your own in in a flask. Of course, it might not taste quite as good, but when you have a nice little amount growing in your savings account you will be glad that you made the switch!
Gym Memberships
Be honest with yourself – how often do you actually go to the gym? If you prefer running outdoors or cycling, for example, there’s really no need to even have a gym membership, as you can get the exercise that you need outdoors. Unless you’re lifting a lot of weights or work out daily and take full advantage of the facilities that you’re paying for, it may be worth considering cancelling your gym membership and finding some fun free ways to work out instead.
Clothes and Shoes
Before you go and buy yourself a new outfit, accessory or a pair of shoes, why not get rid of some of the ones that you have? Today, you can sell anything from earrings to jeans on sites such as eBay, and you can make quite a lot of money for nice clothes in good condition, especially if they’re difficult to get hold of such as limited editions or even plus-sized clothing. Before buying anything new, making money from your old unwanted items can help you to spend less and save more.
When it comes to saving money, many people think that it’s simply impossible. But, by simply being a little bit savvy when it comes to your small, regular spends, you can meet your savings goals very easily.
