SK Hynix Inc. (KS:000660) delivered a standout performance in the first quarter, reporting a dramatic surge in operating profit that exceeded market expectations. The South Korean semiconductor giant benefited significantly from booming artificial intelligence (AI) demand, which continues to reshape the global memory chip industry.
The company announced that its operating profit skyrocketed by 405% year-over-year, reaching a record 37.61 trillion won (approximately $25.42 billion) for the quarter ending March 31. Revenue also saw an impressive jump, rising nearly 200% to 52.58 trillion won. This strong financial performance highlights SK Hynix’s strategic positioning within the rapidly growing AI hardware market.
A key factor behind this growth is the increasing global demand for AI infrastructure. As major technology companies accelerate investments in AI development, the need for advanced memory solutions has surged. SK Hynix, one of the world’s leading memory chip manufacturers, has been at the forefront of supplying these critical components.
High-bandwidth memory (HBM) has emerged as a major growth driver. With AI applications requiring faster and more efficient data processing, demand for HBM chips has soared. SK Hynix, along with its competitors, is actively shifting production toward HBM products to capitalize on this trend. This shift has also contributed to a supply shortage in the memory chip sector, pushing prices higher over the past two quarters.
The company’s close relationship with NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA), a dominant player in AI hardware, further strengthens its market position. As a key supplier, SK Hynix is well-positioned to benefit from NVIDIA’s continued growth and the broader expansion of AI technologies.
