AEON said Oct. 15 its Chile checkout ties crypto payments to local peso transfers, adding another Latin American settlement market and a possible payment route for AI agents.
Under the flow AEON described, a customer enters an amount in Chilean pesos (CLP), selects a crypto asset and wallet, then pays through AEON Pay. AEON says it converts crypto payments into fiat, then starts a transfer to the merchant through Chile's banking system. That separates the customer's payment method from the merchant's settlement currency: the buyer uses crypto, while the seller's transfer is in pesos. AEON did not name the supported assets or wallets, specify transaction fees, exchange rates or settlement times, or identify Chilean merchants using the feature.
AEON presents local bank settlement as a possible way for AI agents using crypto to pay merchants, but its announcement did not describe an agent completing a purchase through the Chile option. The company said local settlement infrastructure also covers Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Bolivia and Colombia.
AEON put direct bank transfers at about 15% of online purchases in Chile, without describing the basis for the estimate. A survey published in 2025 by ChilePay and the National Chamber of Commerce of Chile found bank transfers accounted for 56.7% of online sales reported by 412 micro, small and midsize businesses. The figures have different bases: AEON referred to online purchases, while the survey measured sales reported by businesses.
Individuals made 1.612 billion transactions in the Central Bank of Chile's combined category for electronic transfers and online payments during the 12 months through March 2024. That compared with 1.307 billion in the 12 months to March 2023, a 23% increase. The count includes transfers between people using the same bank or different banks, along with other online payments; it does not isolate e-commerce activity.
