Aave's Base Hub Offers USD Coin Loans Against Tokenized U.S. Stocks

Aave Labs said on Sept. 25 that Aave V4's Equities Hub on Base was open. At launch, eligible users outside the United States could pledge seven Coinbase-issued stock tokens as collateral for USD Coin (USDC) loans.

Aave's Base equities hub gives eligible users outside the United States a way to borrow USDC against tokenized U.S. shares while keeping economic exposure to the underlying stocks.

Aave Labs announced on Sept. 25 that Aave V4's Equities Hub on Base was live. Its launch configuration included seven Coinbase-issued stock tokens as collateral, with USDC the only asset users could borrow. The stock tokens themselves were not available to borrow.

Coinbase offers the tokens to eligible non-U.S. persons in permitted jurisdictions. Aave Labs says the market gives those users access to USDC liquidity while they retain exposure to the underlying shares.

Users can transact at any time unless a reserve is paused for a corporate action, such as a stock split, Aave Labs said. On weekends and U.S. market holidays, the collateral price feed keeps its latest reading until updates resume. Interest continues to accrue while the feed holds that value, Aave Labs said.

Aave said Citi Research sees its lending protocol as a possible way to move collateral through tokenized capital markets. Aave's post did not detail the research's analysis. Citi digital-assets equity research director Peter Christiansen has also discussed tokenization's potential to improve institutional collateral use in earlier comments on tokenization and collateral mobility.

A separate paper co-authored by Swift, Citi and The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) describes fragmented financial systems as a barrier to institutional digital-asset use. It identifies connections between financial systems as one foundation for wider adoption, alongside governance, legal certainty, investor protection and operational resilience. The authors compare disconnected systems with early telephone networks. The paper discusses digital finance broadly and does not assess Aave.

Aave Labs expects to add more Coinbase stock tokens and enable borrowing in its GHO stablecoin, subject to governance and risk review. It has set no date for those changes.
