Adalah – The Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel asked Israel’s Supreme Court to restrict firearms carried by official election observers, warning an armed presence could discourage Arab voters before Tuesday’s parliamentary election.

Adalah said its petition followed plans by Likud and Religious Zionism to deploy about 2,000 observers in Arab communities. The requested restriction applies to people serving in official observer roles at polling stations, rather than all firearms at voting sites.

Israel’s parliamentary election is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 27.
