‘American Horror Story’ Season 7 Explores “Deeper Mythologies”, Return of Several ‘Freak Show’ Characters

‘American Horror Story’ season 7 is set to explore “deeper mythologies” as stated by series creator Ryan Murphy. It will feature the return of several characters from season 4, entitled “Freak Show.”

According to USA Today, the official ‘American Horror Story’ twitter account posted a GIF of calm ocean waves spliced with footage of creepy stick dolls with the words “Sweet Dreams” on the top center part of the graphic. The post, dated November 17, was captioned, “The monsters are all gone. #AHSRoanoke.”

The GIF didn’t seem to have anything to do with the latest season of the horror anthology series until viewers managed to connect it to scene in the season 6 finale, where a model of a ship is knocked over in the Roanoke house. It remains unknown if the post is offering a clue to the next season’s theme or if it is merely a red herring, which creator Ryan Murphy is known for.

An article from Yahoo! Style speculated that season 7 may literally focus on a possible ghost ship solely based on the graphic. Murphy teased during a press conference last October that the incoming season involves a “big hook.”

Murphy said, “We’re going to announce [the premise] in the spring… We’re not doing a secrecy thing, but [next season] does have a big hook behind it.” The “big hook” Murphy teased referred to the return of season 4’s characters.

During a previous interview with Entertainment Weekly, Murphy said, “Next year, we will be going back to some Freak Show characters, deeper histories and myhthologies. So we’re sort of still exploring season 4 in season 7.”

Another theory is that season 7 may be set sometime in World War II as this is the period setting of ‘American Horror Story: Freak Show.’ It is also possible that it will delve into the characters’ back stories in the 1950s.

‘American Horror Story’ season 7 was renewed on October 4, 2016. The anthology horror television series was created and produced by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuck. Each season is a contained miniseries with special themes and settings.
