There is no denying that “Aquaman” is one of the most successful films in the DC superhero universe in terms of box office numbers and critical reception. Alongside “Wonder Woman,” it has earned a spot in both the hearts of fans and critics, alike. This is why “Aquaman 2” is such a hotly anticipated sequel, but the filmmakers are not willing to rush it for any reason.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the film’s producer Peter Safran revealed that fans will have to wait until 2022 for “Aquaman 2” because they want to take their time with the sequel. They have no intention to cut corners with the film and this decision appears to have been made at the top at DC.

"[Walter Hamada], myself and James Wan always shared the same philosophy, which is: you want to do it right," the producer explained. "You don't want to do it fast. You just want to do it right."

This is only natural, especially considering the box office numbers brought in by the first film. Earning $1.09 billion worldwide, it is essentially the most valuable DC movie to hit theatres. There is no doubt that there is an appetite to see similar performance with “Aquaman 2” and this is the reason for the huge gap. In case they really can’t wait that long, though, fans can enjoy watching the film’s spin-off during the wait.

Called “The Trench,” this horror movie inspired by the terrifying territory of devolved creatures in “Aquaman” is expected to hit theatres before “Aquaman 2.” Safran said as much while also saying that Jason Momoa (Aquaman) and Amber Heard (Mera) will not be in the film.

“We always, even from the early concept art days, loved the idea of a Trench movie,” Safran revealed. "Then, when audiences embraced it in the movie itself the way they did, particularly that ant farm shot where the camera follows the Trench [creatures] following Arthur and Mera down into the deep, we just knew that we had something very special there and we knew what that movie should be. And consequently, I suspect that that’s one that will come out significantly before Aquaman 2.”
