Ubisoft confirmed that it is working on an “Assassin’s Creed” mobile game set in ancient China at the recently concluded Ubisoft Forward. While the publisher released the first video teaser for the project, many key details remain under wraps after the event.
The French video game giant had several important “Assassin’s Creed” announcements last Saturday that the franchise had its dedicated showcase by the end of the event. One of the biggest confirmations fans got was the ongoing development of a mobile game that Ubisoft only calls “Assassin’s Creed Codename Jade” for now.
While the game still lacks an official title, some details about its setting and gameplay were already confirmed. The brief teaser, with scenes captured in-engine, opens by showcasing an imperial palace in China in 215 BCE. It should give fans some clues on what to expect from the narrative aspect of “Assassin’s Creed Codename Jade.”
During the presentation, the franchise’s vice president, executive producer Marc-Alexis Côté emphasized the historical aspect of “Assassin’s Creed” games through the years. It is then worth noting that 215 BCE was around the middle of the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BCE), which has been recognized as “the first official empire” in China’s history.
The earliest works on the Great Wall of China also started during the Qin Dynasty. It was then not surprising when Côté said players would be able to “parkour atop the Great Wall of China” in “Assassin’s Creed Codename Jade.”
In a follow-up blog post, Ubisoft described “Assassin’s Creed Codename Jade” as a “AAA RPG action-adventure mobile game.” And Côté confirmed that this would be the first open-world game in the series, where players can create their own characters.
The “Assassin’s Creed Codename Jade” trailer does not have any combat scenes. But Côté said the mobile game would feature “all the iconic ‘Assassin’s Creed’ gameplay” optimized for touch controls.
“Assassin’s Creed Codename Jade” is not the only upcoming mobile game for the franchise. Ubisoft also announced that an exclusive mobile game for Netflix subscribers is in the works in partnership with the media streaming giant. It is worth noting that all games currently offered on Netflix Games are completely free to download and do not have in-app purchases.
Fans may have to wait a while, though, to get their hands on “Assassin’s Creed Codename Jade” and the Netflix-exclusive title. Ubisoft did not provide launch windows or exact release dates for both projects at last Saturday’s event.
