NEW YORK, Oct. 16, 2017 -- James Allen, a senior partner in Bain & Company’s London office, has been named to Consulting magazine’s inaugural “Global Leaders in Consulting” list in the category of Excellence in Influence.
Allen is the co-leader of Bain’s global Strategy Practice, the founder of the firm’s Customer Strategy & Marketing Practice and a member of Bain’s European Consumer Products and Technology Practices. In addition, he leads Bain's Founders Mentality 100 initiative, hosting more than 30 Founder Forums around the world since 2015. He is a recognized leading expert in developing global corporate and business unit strategy and, with 30 years of consulting experience, has worked extensively for multi-national companies in consumer products, technology and telecommunications, healthcare, and other industries.
“James is an integral part of Bain’s growth and success around the world,” said Paul Meehan, regional managing director for Bain Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). “His vision for the future of business has influenced how we as a firm think about strategy, growth and innovation – the underpinning of all our work at Bain – and it is exciting to see his contributions recognized by his peers in the industry.”
Allen has led the firm’s Strategy Practice since 2006. Under his stewardship, the practice delivers approximately a quarter of the firm’s revenue, making it the firm’s largest for over a decade. Additionally, it incubated the firm’s Innovation and Insights Groups. Within the practice, Allen led a multi-year effort – The CEO Agenda – that he has shared with over 300 CEOs in the last several years and has been integral to CEO trainings.
He co-authored forward-looking research, Firm of the Future, which was presented at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in 2017. The perspective was also featured content for The Financial Times’ FT Leadership Dialogues.
Last year, Allen co-authored The Founder’s Mentality, which ranked at the top of Amazon and Harvard Business Review’s best-seller lists, and was a top pick by The Washington Post and Forbes. The Founder's Mentality examines how founder-led companies successfully scale without losing their entrepreneurial spirit. He has also co-authored several best-selling books on the topic of growth with Harvard Business Review Press, including Repeatability: Build Enduring Businesses for a World of Constant Change (2012) and Profit from the Core: a Return to Growth in Turbulent Times (2010), an updated edition of his 2001 book, Profit from the Core: Growth Strategy in an Era of Turbulence. His articles and blogs are featured regularly in the Harvard Business Review and The Wall Street Journal.
“It’s an honor to be recognized by Consulting magazine on its inaugural list of global leaders,” said Allen. “I’ve had the great fortune of working for a truly entrepreneurial firm that supported me as I set out to launch new initiatives and efforts focused on helping our clients address the challenges they face as they grow. This award is a thank you to Bain leadership and to my colleagues around the world for both championing me and challenging me every day.”
Allen joined Bain in Boston in 1989, transferring to Moscow in 1991 to lead the firm’s emerging Russian practice. He relocated to London in 1995 and led the office's Consumer Products and Strategy Practices. He has served two terms on Bain's board of directors and chaired Bain’s Nominating Committee.
He earned his MBA from Harvard Business School and graduated as Baker Scholar.
Allen and his fellow honorees will be recognized at a dinner on December 7 in London.
Coverage of the honorees and the event appears in Consulting magazine’s January 2018 issue (www.consultingmag.com). Consulting is published by ALM, a global leader in specialized industry news and information.
