Bitcoin startup Airbitz rebrands as ‘Edge’

Leading bitcoin wallet Airbitz has announced that it is rebranding as “Edge” as it highlights its focus on its ‘Edge Security’ as the core of its brand.

San Diego-based Airbitz is focused on bringing ease-of-use and ease-of-security to blockchain services and decentralized applications, smoothing the path to mass adoption with its Edge Security Platform. Airbitz has been developing its Edge Security Platform since it was founded in 2014. Since releasing the Edge Security SDK in Q1 of 2016, there are now a handful of apps leveraging Airbitz Edge Security in the iOS and Android app stores.

“At the foundation of our wallet was a new way to secure sensitive data: Client side security that put the user in control in a friendly and usable way. This is what we call security at the ‘edges’ of the network,” the company said in its official release. “We are highlighting this focus of ‘Edge Security’ as the core of our brand and thus Airbitz is now ‘Edge’. Edge will deliver products that challenge conventional security models and put users in control of their data.”

Edge Wallet

In addition to the rebranding effort, the company has announced its Edge Wallet, which will bring the simplicity of its Edge Security platform to all digital assets.

Built from the ground up, Edge Wallet employs a modular architecture that allows it to secure and transact with any blockchain or token. It will ship with support for Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Augur REP, Wings, and Matryx tokens.

In addition, Edge said that it has tightly integrated support for Shapeshift, which will allow users to seamlessly convert funds between the various digital currencies and tokens it supports.

“Gone are the days of having to copy and paste addresses to send and receive funds between a blockchain app and a wallet. And with our Shapeshift integration, users will be able to directly convert from tokens in one dapp, such as Augur REP, to tokens residing in another dapp such as Wings,” it said.

Edge Wallet will also include support for SegWit transactions for Bitcoin and Litecoin.

Decentralized Applications (dapps)

Edge said that it will allow users to authenticate and see the funds used in dapps that utilize its Edge Security SDK. Users can use the Edge Wallet itself to login to partner apps such as Augur and Wings with just the scan of a bar code. After authenticating with the dapp, users will be able to see and transact the same Ether, REP, and Wings funds that they hold in their Edge Wallet.

“Edge has been positioning itself to be a trusted solution for making Web 3.0 applications more usable while keeping the ethos of our decentralized revolution in-tact. With the development of decentralized applications (dapps) and the proliferation of private keys, Edge will help users and developers alike keep security and privacy at the forefront while making these applications less daunting for the average user,” it added.
