BBT SE, the company operating the Brenner Base Tunnel project between Austria and Italy, told Austria’s Tiroler Tageszeitung on Friday that a cyberattack had not affected project operations. The operator told the newspaper Friday that the intrusion had caused no interruption to work on the tunnel.

The company said its response included separating the affected data source and alerting authorities. The newspaper reported that the company is investigating the incident.

The people responsible have not been identified. Tiroler Tageszeitung reported that Everest, a Russian-speaking group, may have been involved, citing information linking it to an international cyber extortion network. A ZeroFox analysis cited by the newspaper describes the group’s tactics as stealing sensitive data, threatening to publish it and demanding payment.

BBT SE did not answer the newspaper’s questions about whether it had opened negotiations with the attackers or made payments, Tiroler Tageszeitung reported.
