Briferendum Aftermath Series: Brexit minister outlines exit strategy

The United Kingdom’s Brexit secretary, David Davis, speaking to the parliament, laid out the strategies that the kingdom will adapt while negotiating an exit from the European Union. He said that it is not necessary for Britain to remain a member of the single market to have access to it. He pointed that there are countries, who are not a member of the European Union but they are better at selling to the single market. He added that the government would keep paying the farmers subsidies it receives from the European Union until, 2020. Below are the key principles, upon which, Britain will base its negotiations,

  • Building a national consensus,
  • Putting the national interests first,
  • Minimizing uncertainties, and
  • Putting the sovereignty of the parliament beyond doubt.

He shrugged off the idea of a second referendum. Ha added that the government is yet to decide on whether it wants to remain in the European Union customs department or not, but will do so before the Article 50 exit clause is triggered.

However, he received criticism from the members of various parties, who called his plan hollow and lacking details.
