Briferendum Aftermath Series: Is election a second referendum on EU?

Earlier this month, the UK Prime Minister Theresa May surprised both financial and political world by announcing a snap general election on 8th June. She is expecting that the outcome of the election would give her stronger mandate to steer the UK through Brexit. She said that while people of the UK are uniting after the referendum, the Westminster and the regional parliaments haven’t done so. According to her, political opponents are looking to undermine the government efforts to make the best of the Brexit.

Just weeks after Mrs. May’s announcement, the President of the European parliament, speaking after his first meeting with the Prime Minister at the Downing Street said that if Britons were to change their mind on Brexit, they could easily do so and the European Union would welcome them with open arms, “If the UK, after the election, wants to withdraw Article 50, then the procedure is very clear…..If the UK wanted to stay, everybody would be in favor. I would be very happy.” His comments came in sharp contrast to the comments made by Theresa May, who said while announcing the election that there is no turning back from the Brexit process. She said and we quote, “Britain is leaving the European Union and there can be no turning back”.

The former Labor Party Prime Minister Tony Blair has called the current leader Jeremy Corbyn to oppose a hard Brexit plan and called for a united front against Mrs. May’s conservative party in the upcoming election. Mr. Jeremy Corbyn has been asked to present clear Brexit choices to voters by the ‘Remaineers’. The Scottish National Party leader Nicola Sturgeon, who prefers to remain within the European Union has also called for a united opposition against the conservatives. However, there is yet no consensus on that.
