Briferendum Aftermath Series: Sturgeon to stand by EU migrants

Scotland’s first minister and the leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP), Nicola Sturgeon has already vowed to do what’s best for Scotland even if that means breaking out of the United Kingdom. Just after the referendum, where the United Kingdom voted to move out of the European Union but Scotland overwhelmingly voted for a stay, she made her visit to European Council to make her case to join the EU if Scotland gains independence. Now, she has made another vow; to stand by the EU migrants living in Scotland.

The first minister moved to reassure European immigrants at a meeting on Wednesday in Edinburgh attended by hundreds of EU nationals and she said, “My commitment to you today is that the interests of all of you, all of you who already play such a big part in the success of our country, will be centre stage,” to the cheering crowd. As of now, immigration is controlled by the lawmakers in Britain but she is looking for a deal to have her say on the matter. She also said, “I think it is disgraceful that such a guarantee hasn’t already been given….You are not bargaining chips, you are human beings with families, jobs, friends and lives here.”

Previously, Ms. Sturgeon focused on securing independence from the United Kingdom but it seems that now, she has focused more towards gaining powers of immigration for her government.
