WILMINGTON, Del., Dec. 05, 2016 -- Bristol is Open, an ambitious joint venture between the University of Bristol and Bristol City Council, received the Internet of Things award in the “The Smart Cities Award” category for its programmable city initiative at the World Communications Awards & Internet of Things Awards on November 29, 2016 in London, U.K.
The Smart Cities Award recognizes leadership in the new smart cities space, from traffic management, transport and security services to street lighting, parking, waste management, and many other related applications. Bristol is Open was shortlisted alongside other industry leaders including Cisco Jasper, InterDigital (NASDAQ:IDCC), and Telekom Malaysia.
Bristol is Open is an open “programmable city” initiative that provides citizens with the ability to participate and contribute to the way their city works. The initiative uses dedicated fiber, mesh and wireless networks especially deployed across the city to create an experimental high-speed, high-performance software defined network. The network provides next generation network research and development opportunities to technology companies, enterprises, research organizations and others. The initiative comprises a number of industry, local host and ecosystem partners including Nokia, InterDigital, University of Bath, Knowle West Media, and Engine Shed, among others.
Since joining the project in December 2015, InterDigital has actively utilized the city-scale research and development network to discover how programmable networks can be used to address a variety of challenges in the city of the future. In February 2016, the company demonstrated a live large scale demonstration over the Bristol is Open test bed that yielded exponential video streaming gains at Mobile World Congress. This demonstration of FLIPS – Flexible IP-based Services – was recognized as ETSI’s MEC Industry Specification Group’s Fourth Proof-of-Concept. FLIPS was again demonstrated using the Bristol is Open network in Bristol, U.K. in May 2016.
“The World Communications Awards and Internet of Things Awards are hailed to be one of the industry’s most prestigious awards, recognizing innovation, merit and outstanding performance in telecoms,” said Alan Carlton, Vice President, InterDigital Europe. “We’re thrilled to congratulate Bristol is Open and honored to partner in building the world’s first open programmable city.”
