British Prime Minister Andy Burnham raised Britain’s aim to change international debt frameworks through its 2027 G20 hosting role in talks with Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley ahead of a Commonwealth summit.

The leaders met Nov. 2 before the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Antigua, the British Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement published Nov. 3.

The account of his meeting with Mottley did not detail a debt proposal.

Burnham also raised the effects of rising sea levels, extreme temperatures and other environmental changes on countries such as Barbados. The leaders agreed that Commonwealth members should continue drawing attention to those effects, and Burnham praised Mottley’s leadership on climate issues.

They discussed next steps for Britain’s offer of a structured dialogue for communities affected by the transatlantic slave trade. Burnham thanked Mottley for her support. The leaders said they looked forward to speaking again during the summit.
